The Newboro Sappers and Miners started the year on a winning note by downing Athens 6-5. Newboro started their season on the road after being rained out in their home opener May 22.
Jeff Rice pitched seven strong innings to get the win but it wasn't without some drama as Athens had the tying and winning run on the bases but couldn't push either across.
Skylar Hudson came up with a big play to preserve the win by blocking the plate at home and, despite being bowled over by the Athens player he was able to hang on to the ball. Some unpleasantries were exchanged after that play but cooler heads prevailed.
Jarret Williams and Jeff Seed both hit home runs in the win. Rookie Caleb Rice had his first hit as a Sapper and Miner, hitting a double just short of the fence in centre.
Next up for Newboro is a make up of the rained out game against Seeley's Bay on Tuesday (June 3) in Newboro and then at home on Thursday against the Easton's Corners Haymakers.
In other action last week, Greenbush beat Easton's Corners As 9-3 and Lyn downed Seeley’s Bay 12-5.
